The History of Grant-Humphreys

Perched on Quality Hill in the heart of Denver, the Grant-Humphreys Mansion was built in 1902 in a Beaux-Arts style commissioned by James Benton Grant, the third Governor of Colorado, and his wife, the prominent socialite Mary Goodell Grant. In 1917, Mary sold the mansion to another influential and connected family, the Humphreys, best remembered for opening Denver’s first airport.

For more than half a century, the Grant-Humphreys Mansion played host to the elegant soirées of Colorado’s elite. In 1976, it was bequeathed by Ira Boyd Humphreys to the Colorado Historical Society (now History Colorado), so that future generations of Coloradans could continue to enjoy this sumptuous setting for their own special occasions.
