David Hull Holmes House

Boulder County

Completed in 1923, the David Hull Holmes House is an excellent example of the work of master architect David Hull Holmes. Born in 1874, Holmes designed over 30 buildings in Tucson and San Diego between 1904 and 1917, a number of which are listed in the National Register.

After relocating to Boulder in 1917, Holmes designed this home for his parents, utilizing the same red sandstone that forms Boulder’s iconic Flatirons rock formations. It is a fine example of the Italian Renaissance Revival style adapted to reflect the local materials and conditions in Boulder and the type of grand dwellings constructed in the University Place subdivision during the height of the neighborhood’s development in the 1920s. In 1925, Holmes designed the large addition at the rear of the home for the Alpha Sigma Chi sorority, which occupied the home between 1925 and 1934.
