Spear Cabin/Turret Post Office

The one-story, L-shaped building consists of a log portion from 1903 or earlier, with a ca. 1904-06 rear addition. Gold seekers were drawn to the Turret area in large numbers in the mid-1890s and the community was eventually granted a post office in early 1898. The pre-1903 Turret Post Office was the last post office of this mining community from ca. 1934 to its closure in 1939. The building served as a critical link between isolated Turret and the outside world. Once a booming center of mining activity in the late 1890s-early 1900s, Turret largely became a ghost town with abandoned buildings by 1940 and lost many of its historic buildings in later years. This building is the only surviving building associated with government functions in the community.
