Emily Griffith Opportunity School

Denver

To date, more than 1.5 million students have been educated at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School, bettering not only the lives of these students but also the city of Denver and state of Colorado.

During its more than 100 years of operation, the Emily Griffith Opportunity School revolutionized how public schools deliver education to students providing a curriculum tailored to working adult learners and targeting marketable technical skills. The school’s founder Emily Griffith recognized a significant need and shortfall in the education system of her time and created the learning environment needed to make education accessible for working adults. The 1926 building is an example of the Classical Revival style of architecture with Beaux Arts embellishments. The 1946 and 1957 additions are examples of the International Style of architecture popularized in the Post-War period.
