Carlyle R. Todd Horse Farm

160 acres were filed as a timber claim by George Todd Sr. in 1888. George Todd Sr. moved to Otero County by ox team and one horse and buggy. The family, including his wife and four sons, lived in a tent until a one room house with a lean-to kitchen was built that fall. The highline irrigation canal was started in 1889 and completed in 1890. Water comes from the Arkansas River near Nepesta, Co. George’s son, George Todd Jr., farmed sugar beets, cantaloupe, hay, and corn until 1947. Since then, Carlyle R. Todd has farmed oats, alfalfa, and grass hay.

Edjar Family Farm

When John and Mary Edgar came to Colorado from Iowa in 1895, they first settled in Otero County near rocky Ford. John soon became involved in the local sugar beet industry and acquired a second farm nearby in 1901. Sons Ray, with wife Lena, and Earnest, with wife Coral took over in 1915 and introduced additional crops at that time. Roy's sons Lyman and Gayle later expanded the farm and by the 1980's Lymans family had brought most of the lands into a family corporation.

Adobe Stables, Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds

The Adobe Stables, constructed in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), are an important record of the federal relief programs administered on Colorado’s eastern plains during the Great Depression.  The stables were one of a series of WPA improvement projects at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds that provided a significant source of employment.  It is the best surviving example of WPA work in Rocky Ford.
