Mt. Vernon House / Robert W. Steele House
Jefferson County
With portions believed to date from 1860, the stone and shingled house marks the location of the Town of Mt. Vernon, which was founded in 1859 and promoted as a potential supply center during the early days of Colorado’s gold rush.
Built by George Morrison, the house was occupied by Robert W. Steele prior to the establishment of the Territory of Colorado in 1861. During 1859-60, Steele served as Governor of the Territory of Jefferson and apparently conducted much of the government’s business there.
