Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Caboose No. 0578
Jefferson County
Built in 1886, Caboose No. 0578 ran in freight service over all of the Rio Grande’s narrow gauge network until its retirement in 1951. It is a rare surviving example of a Class 2 Rio Grande caboose.
The railroad constructed all of its Class 2 cabooses in its own shops. Although later cabooses offered improvements on the Class 2 series, the success of the design is demonstrated by the long operating career of No. 0578.
