Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Antonito Depot
Conejos County
The 1880 Denver & Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) Antonito Depot is an important and distinctive masonry example of a combination-type depot active in the San Luis Valley.
The depot served for over sixty years as the junction point for the branch line to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the D&RG’s San Juan Extension from Alamosa to Durango and Silverton. In addition to providing passenger and express package service, and housing the local office of the Western Union telegraph, the depot also served as the office for railroad freight operations originating or terminating in the Antonito area. The depot was the western-most station on the Rio Grande’s San Juan Extension accommodating both standard and narrow gauge trains.
SHF grants assisted in rehabilitating and restoring the building.
