Nelson House

Boulder County

The Nelson House is an excellent example of Usonian architecture.  Designed by Boulder architect James M. Hunter, the 1951 house displays many of the defining elements of the architectural type, such as large eave overhangs, integration of indoor and outdoor space, and an emphasis on horizontality, enhanced by the use of the flat roof and ribbon windows.

The house exhibits the typical Usonian application of a private side, usually on the south.  The chimney wall, which divides the study and the living room, extends beyond the wall, linking the inside with the outside, again a typical Usonian feature.  Architect Frank Lloyd Wright pioneered Usonianism as the path to affordable modern residential architecture.
