St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church / Church of the Holy Redeemer

Denver County

Recently arrived Caucasian English immigrants collaborated with African Americans fleeing racial violence in the South to form the Church of the Holy Redeemer in 1892.  From their 1931 move to this site, the building’s strategic location in a racially charged section of the city allowed the integrated congregation to set a continual standard of racial tolerance, courage, and service to the community.

A view of the church mostly from the front with a view of buttresses on the side and a gabled apse with square center and large arched window and entryway below.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church / Church of the Holy Redeemer

As originally constructed, the 1910 sanctuary of the then St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is a significant example of the Gothic Revival style as designed by the prominent Denver architectural firm of William E. Fisher and Arthur A. Fisher.  St. Stephen’s is one of only three churches known to have been designed by the Fishers in Denver.
