The next two ranches we will be recognizing today are a pair of related ranches in the San Luis Valley near Alamosa. The first is the Jones Ranch which was homesteaded in by Henry C. Jones, who came to the Alamosa area from Illinois in 1884 with his new bride Della Roseanna Mercier. They had six children including Ivan and Eldon who both married into the Maddux family, owners of the neighboring ranch that we will be hearing about next. After Eldon Jones married Nora Edith Maddux, they took over operations of the main Jones ranch and started the Eldon Jones Dairy, later called the Sanitary Dairy. Today, the ranch is operated by Henry C. Jones' grandson, Lloyd Eldon Jones. The Jones ranch is also a recipient of the historic structures award.
