The Goemmer Land & Livestock Company encompasses nearly 5000 acres in the area around La Veta in Huerfano County. The ranch got its start in 1876 when John Goemmer, a blacksmith by trade, came to La Veta from Illinois to establish a homestead. John's sons, Pete and Gus grew up to start their own homesteads in the area, and the ranch continuing to grow over the years. Today the Goemmer Land & Livestock  Company is owned and operated by John Goemmer's great grandson, Lowell Goemmer, and his family. The Goemmer family will also be receiving the historic structures award for several of the old buildings that are still in use on the ranch.
