Emerson Farms Inc.

Weld County

The Emerson Farms near Greeley in Weld County is celebrating its centennial this year. The farm was started in 1892 when George Emerson purchased 160 acres from Cyrus W. Matteson who was the farm's original homesteader in the Union Colony in 1871. In 1903 the farm was increased to its present size of 240 acres. Since then the farm has been home to four generations of Emersons, who in the early years raised potatoes, sugar beets and onions. Today, alfalfa, field corn and pinto beans are the main crops. The Emerson family will also be receiving the historic structures award for preserving several original buildings including the farmhouse, bunkhouse and granary, all dating to the 1890s.
