Centennial Farms & Ranches

Young Bros Place

Yuma County

Frederick Young, Nebraska farmer and stove company traveling salesman, met Carrie Bell in California while staying on her father’s ranch.  They married in 1885, moved to Union, Nebraska and farmed. They had 8 children: Leland, Dick, Darrel, Clifford, Harold, AltoFive n, Daphne, and Bernice.  The older sons experienced trouble in Nebraska and needed a fresh start. Frederick moved the entire family, including 4 adult “children” in 1920 to a farm in Joes, CO that boasted a 2-story farmhouse and a large red barn. Sadly, in 1991, the barn burned down. Properties adjoining or near the farm were purchased. The Young Brothers, except Darrel, remained on the farm. Each had a role: Leland, mechanic; Dick, farmed dryland wheat, with horses and later tractors; Clifford, MoorMan’s Feed salesman and small livestock grower; Harold, cook; and Alton, local schoolteacher and cattleman, raised Angus and Hereford cattle. Nephews, Jimmy Weckman and Bob Ward helped farm. Bob married Bettye Jo Willson in 1973, purchased land from the  “Uncles”, and raised Vicki, Cathy and Bryan Ward there. Over the last century, Young Bros. Farm produced: wheat, corn, alfalfa, sunflowers, oats, haygrazer, native pasture, cattle, hogs, chickens, horses, and sheep. Currently, the farm is in CRP and pastureland.
