Spomer Farm

Johann and Susanna Spomer came to America in 1892 with three young children; Mollie, George and Elizabeth. Their youngest child, John, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1895.

By 1900 the family moved to the Globeville area of Denver and in 1911 purchased a farm near Milliken. Johann died in 1929 and Susanna followed in 1933. After that son John and wife Ella farmed until John was killed in a traffic accident in 1941. In later years neighbors have done farming under a Crop Share lease or Susanne Spomer and husband Jon Stephens have leased the land and operated a horse boarding business.

In 1999 Susanne and sister Ella Marie Hayes divided the farm with the Stephens retaining the upper hill section and the Hayes retaining the lower section with the original acreage and buildings. Today Ella and Noel’s son David Hayes rents the buildings (which includes a barn, shed, and wash house from around 1915), corrals and pasture for his Red Barn Bison company and Spomer Ranch Horse Boarding company and lives in the historic family house.
