Seal-Scates Homestead

Boulder County

The Seal/Scates Ranch is comprised of nearly 200 acres of pasture lands in western Boulder County near Nederland. The ranch was first homesteaded sometime before 1885, and by 1886 was home to Agnes Seal, whose husband worked in the mines around Magnolia. Sherman William Scates, came to the ranch in 1886 to help his pregnant cousin Agnes with the ranch work. Sherman eventually bought the ranch himself and expanded its size through additional purchases. Today, the ranch is owned by Sherman's daughter Edith R. Scates, and his grandchildren, Richard Sherman and Eva May Wing Scates. The Scates  family is also receiving the historic structures award for several buildings including the original ranch house and hay barn both dating to the 1880s.
