In 1888, Fred and Sarah Schnell, with their two young daughters moved onto their newly purchased 60 acre farm in what is now incorporated Lakewood. Although the farm has been reduced in acreage over the years, the Schnell family still raise hay and board horses on the land. The Schnells have also preserved several buildings from the early years, for which they will be receiving the historic structures award.
