Pioneer Sod House
Jefferson County
Located on its original site in what is now the Denver suburb of Wheat Ridge, the three-room sod house is now believed to date from as early as 1864. The walls are 30 inches thick, and the hipped roof is wood shingled.
In 1938, a concrete floor was poured over the original wood, and the building remained in continuous use as a residence until 1972. Now falling within the boundaries of Wheat Ridge Historic Park, its significance is enhanced by the fact that sod houses were rarely constructed in the Denver area.
