Nathan C. Meeker, founder of Union Colony, later known as Greeley, built the two-story adobe structure in 1870.
Meeker had been the agricultural editor for Horace Greeley's newspaper, the New York Tribune, and he acted on his supervisor’s famous pronouncement "to go west young man."
