Centennial Farms & Ranches

Lauren James and Jo Ellen Heermann

Phillips County

German immigrants Henry Heermann and Anna Kumm were married in 1899 and lived in Stanton County Nebraska. The Heermann’s were parents to six sons and one daughter: Albert, Rudolph, Emil, Ella, Arthur, Lawrence and Ervin.  Henry and Anna Heermann were farming in Stranton, Nebraska when Henry decided to look for land to buy in Colorado where there weren’t so many hills to farm. On February 16, 1920 he bought land east of Holyoke. Two sons, Albert and Emil came to plow the sod with a Rumley tractor and 4 bottom plow. Grain was stored on the farm then marketed in Holyoke. Wheat to be used for flour in the home was taken to Champion, Nebraska to be milled. Hogs were hauled to Denver by truck. Cattle were shipped by rail. In the 1970s irrigation was installed on the farm. Crops grown have been corn, beans, sunflowers and beets. Henry died in 1947 and Anna in 1969. The farm was passed to Lawrence and Ervin Heeermann. Ervin died in 1994 and Lawrence in 1995. Today Lauren and Jo Ellen Heermann own the farm.
