Kravig Homestead Farm

Lincoln County

After filing homestead paperwork in Minnesota, Gilbert K (the Americanized version of his given Norwegian name Gullick) and wife Mary Kravig traveled via train to their new farm in Colorado in 1910. They brought with them implements, tools, clothing, furniture and livestock in a box car.  Gullick died in 1912 after having the honor of naming the community of Karval and serving as its first postmaster.  Mary continued living on the farm, proving up the homestead claim in 1915 when she was 55 years old.  Crops and livestock raised on the farm included corn, millet, wheat, fodder, cane and cattle.  Daughter Gena took over the land in 1946 upon the death of Mary; her brother Albert became the owner soon after and continued working the land, eventually passing it on to his son Harold in 1976. Harold then sold the farm to his son Dennis in 1979. Dennis continues to live in the original homestead house and raises cattle, forage, and hay and occasionally wheat.  A number of the buildings constructed by Gullick and Mary still stand and are in use on the property.
