Foster House Stage Station and Hotel Site

Las Animas County

The Foster House Stage Station and Hotel began as a small stage stop and freighter’s stop on the Denver and Santa Fe Stage Trail.  In addition to the stage stop, by 1872 it served as a hotel and post office.

James and Susan Foster homesteaded the area and operated the hotel and stage station business along with a cattle ranch.  The 1872 two-story central passage double-pile adobe residence, hotel, and station was built by David Henry of Trinidad.  The hotel later served as a center for tubercular patients.
