First State Bank of Aguilar / Gianella Building

Las Animas County

The building housed the First State Bank of Aguilar, which was founded in 1910 and served as the town’s only banking institution until 1927.

A view of the building with stone work and boarded windows on the bottom floor and open in the top with low ornate roof design.

The building is an example of a two-part commercial block with horizontal divisions into two distinct zones - its large display windows on the street level indicating the public spaces, with the smaller windows on the upper level suggesting more private spaces.  The building is one of only two stone commercial buildings in Aguilar.
