The David Smith Ranches encompass over 4,700 acres located near Meeker in Rio Blanco County. The ranch was started by David Smith, who first came to Colorado from Scotland in 1885. It was six years later, while travelling in England, that he met and married Mary Allsebrook. In 1892 the couple travelled back here from England by ship, train, stagecoach, and finally sled to purchase land and establish a new home in Meeker. Over the years, family members purchased additional tracts of land and settled on new homesteads. Today, the David Smith Ranches exists as a family held corporation, with all the shareholders being  either grandchildren or great grandchildren of David and Mary Smith. The Smith family is also being given the historic structure award for the many original buildings on the ranch.
