Coaldale School

Fremont County

Constructed in 1923 as a replacement for a smaller wood frame school destroyed in a flood, the Coaldale School met the educational needs of the community by serving as the only school until consolidation forced its closure in 1956.

Like most rural schools, the building also served as a community center, hosting a wide variety of activities.  In addition to school-related events, the building was used for community gatherings, including grange meetings, “Sunday school and preaching services,” dances, political caucus meetings, and as a polling place.  After consolidation, the building continued as the community center and remains so today.
