Broadway Bridge

Denver County

Constructed in 1895/96, the Broadway Bridge was a joint project of the City of Denver and the Denver Tramway Company to provide improved vehicular, pedestrian and streetcar traffic across Cherry Creek on North Broadway.  The Youngstown (Ohio) Bridge Company received the contract for the iron work and the impressive stone abutments were built with local labor.

The arched, open web outside girders reflected the prevailing aesthetic of the time which held the arch to be the highest form of bridge design and it was unique in Colorado for its deck girder subtype.  In 1988, the Broadway Bridge was advertised under the “Adopt-A-Bridge” program in an attempt to find a new owner and use for the historic structure after its removal as part of a bridge replacement project.  No reuse alternatives were found.  Removal of the historic bridge began in the spring of 1988 and the replacement bridge was completed by the end of the year.
