The Colorado Magazine (Digital Members)

This spring, the editorial team at History Colorado is proud to share stories from the incredible life of Aurelio M. Espinosa, Colorado’s first folklorist and linguist! As a young scholar in the early twentieth century, Espinosa traveled extensively, collecting and documenting the stories, songs, and cultural traditions that formed the cultural fabric of the San Luis Valley—some of which long predate our state! It’s an excerpt from historian and scholar Enrique Lamadrid’s longer introductory essay in History Colorado’s newest book, Hilos Culturales: Cultural Threads of the San Luis Valley

We’ve also been working with History Colorado staff members Acoma Gaither and Jeremy Morton to uncover the long-overlooked history of Black cowboys in Colorado and to reclaim memories of Villa Italia Mall in Lakewood. Multidisciplinary artist Blake Pfeil’s work returns to the pages of The Colorado Magazine in a tour of Last Chance, Colorado, a largely-abandoned ghost town on the plains east of Denver. And if that weren’t exciting enough, we’re proud to feature a portion of Dr. Tom Noel’s latest writings on Denver’s oldest human-made waterway, the Highline Canal!
